Program - Technovation Challenge 2013 - Dec 15

Technovation Challenge 2013 Theme

The quickest way to become a part of this movement is to start a team. This is how!

Technovation Challenge provides a life-changing experience to girls – an experience through which they succeed in a field they never thought they could contribute to, let alone succeed.
For the 2013 challenge, girls have to develop an app that solves a problem in their local community. This could be a health problem that affects their community, a social problem, or even a lack of a resource.
Over a short period of time (12 weeks), girls will step through an online curriculum (hosted on P2PU) that helps them develop a potential solution and program a mobile phone application to solve it. They will learn how to study their competition, identify ways in which they can gather users and earn revenue.
They will develop a business plan and pitch and will submit their ideas (through video) to a regional (online) competition.
Regional winners will travel to the California and compete at the Technovation World Pitch event on May 1st, 2013. The winning team will receive $10,000 in funding and support to complete their app development and release it on the market.
Here is the rationale behind the curriculum: Rationale

Contest - Google Code-in contest for 13-17 year old students worldwide starts Nov 26th

Google Code-in contest for 13-17 year old students worldwide starts Nov 26th

I am writing to let you know personally that Google Code-in, our
international online contest to introduce 13-17 year old
pre-university students to open source software development begins on
Monday, November 26th, 2012. Prizes for participating in the
online-only contest include certificates, tee-shirts, and an all
expenses paid trip to Google headquarters in California, USA for 20
winners and their parent or legal guardian. You can learn more about
the details of the contest on our blog post -

http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2012/09/google-code-in-contest-for-high-school.html

and the program site -

http://code.google.com/opensource/gci/2012/index.html.

The contest is similar to the Google Summer of Code program for
college students 18 and older, in that it gives participants the
opportunity to work with mentors from carefully chosen free and source
software projects on real-world coding and related tasks. Last year
542 students from 56 countries participated. We hope to expand the
program this year and would appreciate your help and that of the
schools in your association to spread the word to students around the
globe.

Thank you in advance for any help. Please let me know if you have any
questions: we'd be happy to answer them.

Regards,
Cat

Very good article on and about the use of Social Media.
"It should be clear by now that social media are not a passing trend. For many adults and even more young people, social media are an integral part of life -- so they must become an integral part of education."

Free software - Phrogram for programming

http://phrogram.com/content/whatisphrogram.aspx

If you want to make games or software programs for your Windows PC, you may try to start with Java, C++, or Visual Basic - but their "syntax" (how commands are written) can be very challenging. You will also need to use a complex "development environment" like Visual Studio or Eclipse - great for big projects, but not for getting started.

There are also products like Alice and Scratch that are great if you want your program to tell a story or show animation, but they won't really convey how programmers write, test and debug software code - and that's what makes Phrogram different.

With Phrogram, you can learn the experience of programming using a development environment that is similar to what working programmers use to write, test and debug their software programs.
Phrogram does not try to "hide" the source code or over-simplify programming concepts by basing them on visual, "drag-and-drop" techniques. It's built on the principle that it's better to get acquainted with source code right away, because learning how to read and write it is not as hard as it may look, and if you give it a try, you will learn faster, and gain real skills that you can put to use in creating games and other fun programs.
Phrogram's programming language is concise and the tools are easy to master, so you won't need to absorb vast amounts of information to learn how to use it. There are also dozens of built-in sample programs and hundreds of user-uploaded examples on our website. And because Phrogram is built on Microsoft's powerful .NET Framework, your programs can do much more with much less code.

Phrogram's development environment is designed for learning and teaching. Don't worry about managing many of the complex tasks that make programming seem hard - with Phrogram, you will learn the skills and techniques that working programmers apply all the time.

So start writing your own code in a powerful yet straightforward way, and create programs in both 2D and 3D environments. It's easy to learn powerful programming concepts - even networking, databases, precision math, file input/output and many other extensions - with Phrogram!

Free software - Scratch for programming

About Scratch

Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.
As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
